From briefing to final image: the stages of a professional 3D rendering project
Many clients come to their first rendering project without knowing exactly what to expect from the process. Understanding the stages helps to better prepare materials, set deadline expectations, and get the best possible result from the partnership with the studio.
Stage 1: Briefing and receipt of materials
The creation of a professional 3D rendering starts with the briefing. This involves a discussion or structured form where the studio gathers all project details, including floor plans and files in DWG or PDF format, visual references, finishing specifications, color palette, intended furniture, and the desired ambiance. A more comprehensive briefing leads to fewer revisions during the process.
Stage 2: 3D Modeling
With the materials in hand, the team models the environment in three dimensions. At this stage, the spatial geometries are built — walls, floors, ceilings, frames — and the furniture and accessories are positioned according to the project. Any inconsistencies between floor plans are identified and communicated to the client here.
Stage 3: Material application and lighting
Each surface receives its texture and physical properties: reflectivity, roughness, translucency. In parallel, the lighting is configured — natural light through openings, project luminaires, point sources. This stage largely defines the realism and atmosphere of the final image.
Stage 4: Rendering and post-production
The rendering engine processes the scene, calculating the behavior of light on each surface. The raw result then goes through post-production: exposure adjustments, color temperature, depth of field, and elements added in compositing — such as external vegetation or sky.
Stage 5: Revision and delivery
The images are presented to the client for review. Camera, composition, material, or lighting adjustments are applied according to feedback. After approval, the final files are delivered in the agreed resolutions and formats — high-resolution JPEG, PNG, or TIFF for printing.
At GRØN 3D Studio, this process is documented and communicated at each stage, ensuring the client has full visibility into the project’s progress. Contact us to get started.
